Fund to Support Young People after the Fires.

Young people and adults in communities affected by February's devastating bushfires will have access to targeted counselling and youth participation programs under a new $8.8 million Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund package to further support psychological recovery from the fires.

On Wednesday 29th of July, Premier John Brumby and Bushfire Appeal Fund chair John Landy outlined details of an $8.8 million package which focuses on support for children and young adults, counselling services for people who may need more support and providing forums in which people can share their experiences.

"In communities across Victoria we are seeing positive steps towards recovery but we cannot underestimate the distress these fires have had on individuals and families" Mr Landy said.

"The Appeal Fund has carefully considered how best to build on existing support for our bushfire-affected communities in what is a sensitive, difficult area and I believe we have developed a package that will give children, adolescents, young adults and adults access to support that best suits their needs during their recovery from the worst natural disaster in Australia's history.

"The package will include a range of individual and program-based support services, specifically targeting the bereaved and additional psychological support for children of 10 to young adults of 26 with the aim re-engaging this vulnerable group to their communities and each other."

Full details can be found at:

Australian Youth Forum

On 2 October 2008 the Australian Government launched the Australian Youth Forum initiative.

This initiative is aimed at providing young Australians aged 16–24 and the youth sector with the opportunity to communicate their ideas, thoughts and opinions to Government on issues important to them.

The Australian Youth Forum has a dedicated website, enabling young people to have their say at any time. This website includes discussions boards on topical matters and announcements of future forums and events.

On 20 February 2009 the Australian Youth Forum will host its first multi-locational forum between the Federal Minister for Youth, Kate Ellis, and young people from across Australia.

Ten locations across all Australian states will be linked by live video satellite so that young people can lead and contribute to these discussions.

Schools 2020 Summit

The 2020 Schools Summits were designed to get young people involved in shaping Australia’s future. And get
involved is exactly what they did. School children from more than 500 schools across Australia participated in
the summits which were held across Australia for a three-week period from 17 March 2008.

The Schools Summit Report, "Voices of the Future" has just been published this week.

The Federal Minister for Edcuation, the Honourable Julia Gillard has said:

I have been singularly impressed by the passion and commitment of the many thousands of young people who
participated and who used this opportunity to put forward some really sound and important ideas about the
future challenges facing Australia. This report contains an overview of their refreshingly innovative ideas,
    thoughts and solutions.
